Home-Style Recipes
The recipes on CeylonCooking are authentic, home-style Sri Lankan dishes, written the way they are cooked in family kitchens. They are shared in good faith for your enjoyment and learning.
Cooking is not an exact science. Your results will vary with the brand and freshness of your ingredients, your equipment, your stove, your altitude and your technique. Treat our times, temperatures and quantities as well-tested guidance rather than guarantees, and trust your own senses as you cook.
Allergen Warning
Many Sri Lankan dishes contain common allergens, including coconut, tree nuts, sesame, shellfish, fish (such as dried fish and Maldive fish), mustard and gluten. Ingredient lists can also change between brands, and cross-contamination can occur during manufacturing.
You are responsible for checking that a recipe and its ingredients are safe for you and anyone you cook for. Always read product labels carefully, and if you or your guests have a food allergy or intolerance, do not rely solely on our recipes. Confirm every ingredient yourself.
Nutrition Information Is an Estimate
Where we provide any nutritional information, it is an approximate estimate generated for general guidance only. Actual values depend on the exact products, brands, portion sizes and substitutions you use.
If you are counting nutrients for medical, dietary or fitness reasons, please calculate the values yourself from your specific ingredients, or consult a qualified professional.
Substitutions Affect Results
We often suggest substitutes so cooks outside Sri Lanka can still make our dishes. These swaps are helpful, but they will change the flavour, texture, spice level and sometimes the cooking time of a recipe.
A substitution is a compromise, not an identical match. When you change an ingredient, taste as you go and adjust seasoning, liquid and heat to suit what you have used.
Food Safety Is Your Responsibility
Safe food handling (storing, washing, thawing and cooking ingredients to safe temperatures) is your responsibility. Take particular care with meat, poultry, seafood, eggs and dried fish. When in doubt, follow recognised local food-safety guidance.
